Kids under the age of 16 and students aged between 16 and 19 in full time education are entitled to a free NHS eye examination. It is recommended that children under the age of 16 should have an eye examination at least once a year.
Our eyes develop within the first decade of our life so it is imperative that any visual problems are detected in this time and appropriate treatment is given. If there is a history in your family of spectacle wear, squints or lazy eyes it is important for your child to be tested regularly.
Your child does not need to be able to read letters in order to have their eyes tested. No matter what your child’s age or ability we will be able to perform an eye examination. There are many tests specifically designed for children, our automated tests charts have picture options instead of letters and there are some tests which require no verbal response at all.
Our no rush, relaxed appointments policy ensures children attending their first eye examination feel comfortable which is important to ensure accurate sight test results. We understand that for children any medical environment can be intimidating so we work hard to keep our practice friendly and inviting.
A children’s examination aims to check the following:
- Measurement of vision using pictures or letters
- Eye movement and checking for squints
- Examination of the front and back of the eye
- Measurement of their prescription to tell if glasses are required, this may involve using drops if necessary to obtain an accurate prescription
- Pupil reactions
- Stereopsis (3D test) to ensure that the eyes are working as a pair
- Colour Vision Test
Our accredited optometrists regularly assess children as part of the PRR (paediatric referral refinement scheme) which is linked to the school vision screening service. This Sheffield based scheme aims to detect kids with visual problems when they start primary school. Our extensive kids frames range includes brands such as Disney Princess, Spiderman and Ben 10. We have frames to suit all ages and budgets including our ‘Kids go free’ range with an NHS voucher.
